Chilean fishers suffer due to tsunami
    Sydney Sun
    Wednesday 17th March, 2010

A tsunami that rolled through coastal areas of Chile last month, following the 8.8-magnitude earthquake, has caused enormous problems for the fishing industry.

The start of the four-month fishing season has been delayed after tsunami waves tossed around fishing boats and threw them up onto the streets.

In some areas where fishing is the main industry, the problems will be far-reaching, with city officials estimating that it could take up to a decade to rebuild homes and port facilities.

Many economists are also suggesting that some seaside areas that were ravaged by the tsunami could take a long time to pick themselves back up.

The quake devastated nearly a third of the fishing industry in the south-central part of the country, where the tremor struck hardest.
